Yox Scholarship
and College Outreach

Three Young Moms
Selected as Scholarship Recipients

The Yox Scholarship is named after Elizabeth Yox, former Dayton Right to Life Office Manager.  The scholarship is designed to assist women who have experienced an untimely pregnancy, completed their high school education, and wish to further their education by attending college.  Since 1997, over 25 women have been awarded over $30,000.00 in scholarships.  This year’s winners are:  Heather Collins, Rosemary Fouts, and Kimberly Puthoff.  We offer them our sincere congratulations as they go forth to achieve their goals.

Heather - Yox WinnerHeather, 18, is from Tipp City and is the mother of Braxton, now 5 months old.  Heather is a graduate from Vandalia-Butler with a 3.5 GPA.   She became pregnant during her junior year and knew her life would change forever, but has become more determined than ever to provide for her child.  She wants to show her son that “hard work pays off and no matter what stands in your way your dreams can come true.” Heather will be attending the Miami Valley Career Technology Center’s Adult Education LPN classes and continue on at Kettering College of Medical Arts to become a registered nurse.  She plans to specialize in neonatal care.  In her essay she wrote, “A scholarship would allow me to continue working part-time while going to school.  Having enough time to study as well as spend quality time with my son is extremely important to me.”  Heather will be totally responsible for all of her living and education expenses and currently works at Outback Steakhouse.  “Society’s return from me if I get this scholarship is that I will be able to help others in need and maybe even help you.  I am a hard worker and I never give up.”  Her dream for her child is to be “healthy and happy and go to college and be successful in whatever he chooses to do.”

Rosemary - Yox WinnerRosemary, 25, is raising her one-year-old son Gideon by herself while taking on-line classes to further her education.  She plans to study computer information systems at Sinclair so she can assist senior citizens in utilizing technology.  Her sponsor, Jane Cook from Miami Valley Women’s Center, described Rosemary as “Responsible, dedicated, committed and humble and witnessed her unwavering commitment to her son.  Jane related, “I have seen her consistently put Gideon’s needs and welfare ahead of her own.  She disciplines him in loving kindness and has a desire to provide a solid spiritual home for herself and her son.”  In her essay, Rosemary described her journey as a single mom.  “I want my son to see what God can make out of a seemingly awful situation.  He has used this opportunity for me to grow in Him and in myself.  I read my Bible, went to church on Sunday, and tried half-heartedly to live the life He wanted me to love.  I did not think I was strong enough to make it as a single mother.  When I started my college education is when my mindset changed.”  Rosemary spends her days caring for her son and her nights into the wee hours of the morning being a student.  In her words, “The tradeoff is well worth it!”  Her goal for her child is to “grow up seeing that he can accomplish what he thinks is important enough to work for.  I want him to know through my actions and examples, how much I love him.”

Kimberly - Yox WinnerKimberly, 18, is from Bradford and the mother of 3-year old Alaenna.  Kimberly graduated from Bradford High School with a 2.96 GPA.  She plans to attend Edison State College to e major in secondary education to become an English teacher.  During her high school internship with the Teacher Academy, she became inspired to helping students reach their full potential in life.  Kimberly became pregnant in her freshman year and admittedly was not ready to be a parent.  She “chose life for her daughter” because she “believes every child has a purpose for coming into the world.”  Kimberly matured quickly as she took on the responsibility of caring for her daughter.  Her daughter now attends pre-school and Kimberly is learning to adapt to a new morning routine with a sometimes “grumpy” toddler.  Kimberly realizes the value of an education and did not have the nurturing environment of a stable household.  She and her brother moved often and Kimberly has come to realize she does not want a violent household for her child.  She comes from a family with four generations of teen parents on both sides and wants her daughter to be the exception.  “I do not want her to face the struggles I face from day to day as a teen mom.  I will do my part in preventing her from being the fifth generation teen parent.”  Her dream for her child is to “graduate from high school and go to college without any children.  I would like to see her in a career she loves in the next 20 years."
