Black Life Issues & Action Network

Black Life Issues & Action Network is a faith-based program dedicated to preserving and protecting the lives of unborn Black children by reducing abortions.  Our objective is to strengthen Black families and communities, and restore a culture of life among us.

What Does Black Life Issues & Actions Network Do?

  • Educates the Black community about the destructive effect abortion has on our families, and about life-giving alternatives to abortion.
  • Empowers women, teens and families to overcome the situations that often surround abortion:  sexual aggression, violence and abuse; unhealthy relationships; premature sexual involvement and other related issues.
  • Engages policymakers to influence laws and public policy that will help women and teens avoid abortion; and that will protect them from unjust and oppressive laws related to abortion.
  • Brings healing and restoration to those hurt by an abortion experience, including women who have had abortions, and others who have been involved in some way in another's abortion.  More information here.

Facts

Myth:  Abortion is not our issue. Black women don’t have abortions.

Fact: Black women account for 36.4% of abortions. For every 1,000 Black women, 34 have had an abortion. This is the highest rate of any race. For every 1,000 children born to Black women, 459 children are aborted by Black women. This is the highest ratio of any race.

Myth: There are other more pressing issues in the Black community. More Blacks are dying more from other causes than from abortion.

Fact: For the past 35 years, more Blacks have died from abortion than from any other cause of death. Over 14 million Black people have been killed by abortion. That’s over 2.6 times more than have died from AIDS, violent crimes, accidents, cancer, and heart disease combined.

Myth: Abortion really has no tangible effect on the Black community.

Fact: As of 2005, 9.5% of the Black population has been killed by abortion. Blacks are no longer the largest minority in the U.S.; Hispanics are now the largest minority in the U.S. This translates to less economic, political, and social power.

Myth:  Pro-life people only care about the unborn baby and don't care about the issues that make Black women feel compelled to have an abortion.

Fact:  Many pro-life organizations address the full spectrum of need associated with women's reasons for having abortions. For example, Life Resource Centre has a baby pantry for infant supplies and equipment, parenting classes, mentoring programs and collaborates with an organization that provides job and life skills training.
